Character vs. Talent

I really liked your comments about the Obama-McCain forum.  Right on target.  I'm reminded about something that H. Jackson Brown wrote:  "Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent.  Most talents are, to some extent, a gift.  Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it, piece by piece - by thought, choice, courage and determination."  That's why measuring and comparing character in the upcoming election is so important.  Peter Drucker said, "The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say "I."  And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say "I."  They don't think "I."  They think "we," they think "team."  They understand their job to be to make the team function.  They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but "we" gets the credit.  This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done."  So, let's watch Obama and McCain closely. Let's see who says "I" and who says "We."  And let's keep the focus on character.
