Government Corruption

Nice blog Chert. Right on target. Politics really do give us a great opportunity to focus on character or lack thereof. Changing the subject a bit, I was very pleased with the outcome of the cases against Detroit Mayor Wwame Kilpatrick and ex-Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff. A jail sentence, fine, loss of licence to practice law and not running for elected office for five years is not enough for a man who betrayed the public trust and failed to provide the promised leadership in these difficult times. Kilpatrick's responsibility to his city was to help fight crime and unemployment but his lack of character undid all of the good he might have done. Shame on him. As for Jack Abramoff, four years was not enough. The fact that he helped the Justice Department in cases against politicians to benefit himself and to gain leniency is not an example of bad character turned good but rather bad character being used for personal gain. The idea that you can buy votes on key issues with golf junkets, expensive meals and luxury seats at sporting events and that key decisions affecting the lives of millions of Americans can be bought is shameful. The fact that he accuses John McCain and his committee for making him the fall guy is even worse; like what he did wasn't bad enough. The American people must look past rhetoric and charisma when electing its leaders at any level.
The stakes are too important. Both Wwame and Jack got what they deserved.
